Most 4WD jeep tours take you to the ridges of the Tengger Caldera before dawn. You will wait in the cold for the sun to illuminate Mount Bromo. Knowing the differences between the main viewpoints helps you plan your morning.
What is Mount Penanjakan (Penanjakan 1)?
Mount Penanjakan is the highest and most famous viewpoint at 2,770 meters.
This spot provides an unobstructed, classic view of the caldera. Because it is the most popular, it gets extremely crowded. You need to arrive very early, before 4:00 AM, to secure a space at the viewing railing.
What is King Kong Hill (Bukit Kedaluh)?
King Kong Hill is a slightly lower viewpoint that is often less crowded than Penanjakan.
It serves as a beautiful alternative to the main peak. Photographers often prefer this spot because there is more room to set up a tripod. You still get a clear view of Mount Bromo and Mount Semeru in the background.

Penanjakan vs King Kong Hill: Which is better?
King Kong Hill is better for photography and avoiding crowds, while Penanjakan offers the absolute highest vantage point.
Your jeep driver will often ask which viewpoint you prefer. If you want the classic high-angle view and do not mind shoulder-to-shoulder crowds, choose Penanjakan. For a more relaxed morning, ask for King Kong Hill.
What is Seruni Point (Penanjakan 2)?
Seruni Point is a lower viewpoint accessible by foot or a short jeep ride from Cemoro Lawang.
Independent travelers walking from the village often use this spot. It takes less time to reach than the higher peaks. You will wait 1-2 hours here for sunrise, just like the higher hills.

How cold are the sunrise viewpoints?
Morning temperatures at the viewpoints drop to 5-10°C (41-50°F).
You will stand still in the dark for 1-2 hours waiting for the sun. Wear a warm winter jacket, gloves, and a beanie. A headlamp is also useful for navigating the dark paths to the viewpoints.

When is the best time for clear views?
The dry season from April to October offers the best chance for clear sunrise views.
During these months, you are less likely to encounter fog blocking the caldera. Mount Penanjakan and King Kong Hill both offer clear views of the nearby Mount Batok and the distant Mount Semeru.

Questions travellers ask
Can I walk to Penanjakan 1 without a jeep?
Yes, but it is a long, dark hike. Most independent travelers walking from Cemoro Lawang choose Seruni Point (Penanjakan 2) instead, as it is closer and easier to reach on foot.
Do I need a mask at the viewpoints?
A mask is helpful. While the heavy dust is mostly down in the Sea of Sand, the viewpoints can still catch blowing volcanic dust from the crater below.
Are toilets available at the viewpoints?
Yes, basic facilities exist near the jeep parking areas. Bring cash in Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) to pay for toilet access or hot tea while you wait.
