Mount Bromo is open year-round, but your experience changes depending on the month you arrive. You must decide if you want clear sunrises or a green savanna.
When is the dry season at Mount Bromo?
The dry season runs from April through October.
These months offer the best conditions for the classic Mount Bromo sunrise. You will find clearer skies, reducing the chance of fog blocking your view from Mount Penanjakan.
This is peak season. Book your tickets early to secure a spot within the daily 2,752-person quota.

Can I visit Mount Bromo during the rainy season?
Yes, Mount Bromo remains open during the rainy season from November to March.
Morning clouds and fog are much more common, which can obscure the sunrise. However, the rain clears the volcanic dust from the air.
This season is the best time to visit the southern side of the caldera. This is where Teletubbies Hill turns bright green.

How cold does Mount Bromo get?
Pre-dawn temperatures at the viewpoints consistently drop to 5-10°C (41-50°F).
The high elevation means mornings are cold regardless of the season. You must pack warm winter clothing, including a jacket, beanie, and gloves. Once the sun rises and you cross the Sea of Sand, the temperature warms up significantly.
When is Mount Bromo most crowded?
Crowds peak during the dry season and on weekends or holidays all year.
If you visit between June and August, expect thousands of visitors at the viewpoints. Read our Sunrise Viewpoint Guide guide for alternative spots. King Kong Hill can be slightly less crowded.

What time does the sunrise tour start?
Organized jeep tours typically leave Malang or Probolinggo around midnight.
This early departure gets you to the viewpoint by 4:00 AM. Arrive this early to claim a good spot at the railing. After sunrise, the tour moves into the caldera to cross the Sea of Sand.

Is there a better time of day to avoid crowds?
Visiting in the late morning or afternoon allows you to skip the heavy sunrise traffic.
Most tourists leave the crater by 9:00 AM. A sunset tour lets you explore the crater with few other people around. You will miss the morning inversion clouds, but afternoon photography conditions remain excellent.
