Mount Bromo sits inside the massive 10-kilometer-wide Tengger Caldera. After viewing the sunrise, visitors descend into this basin to cross the fine gray volcanic ash.
You will need a local 4WD jeep or a 45-minute hike to reach the base of the mountain. From there, it requires climbing approximately 250 concrete steps to look directly into the smoking crater rim.

The smoking, active vent of Mount Bromo sits at 2,329 meters above sea level. You reach the rim by climbing about 250 concrete steps from the sand floor. The sulfur smell can be intense. Do not linger long if the wind blows in your direction.

This active Hindu temple sits directly on the sand near the base of the volcano. The Tenggerese people hold deep spiritual ties to this site. Visitors cannot enter the inner temple walls. The dark structures stand out clearly against the gray landscape.

Mount Batok is an extinct, perfectly cone-shaped volcano located right next to Bromo. It is covered in green vegetation. This greenery creates a sharp visual contrast with the barren gray ash surrounding the active crater.
